In response to user experience concerns, Chrome began unloading "heavy ads" that demand excessive CPU or network resources to improve page performance.
The Heavy Ad Intervention test in Advalidation identifies instances where ads may be unloaded by Chrome due to excessive resource use. This ensures ads stay within acceptable limits for CPU and network usage, enhancing user experience and ad performance.
Heavy ad interventions test in Advalidation
When this test/setting is enabled, Advalidation will flag instances where ads may be unloaded by Chrome due to excessive resource use, based on these Chrome criteria:
- CPU usage: The ad is deemed heavy if it uses the main CPU thread for more than 60 seconds total or exceeds 15 seconds within any 30-second window.
- Network usage: The ad is also deemed heavy if it uses more than 4 MB of total network bandwidth.
Advalidation's recommendation
We recommend using this setting to detect whether Chrome would unload an ad, allowing for proactive adjustments to reduce resource strain.
