Chroma subsampling is the practice of encoding images by implementing less resolution for chrominance (chroma) information than for luminance information, taking advantage of the human visual system's lower acuity for colour differences than for luminance.
Chroma subsampling settings in Advalidation
In Advalidation, you can select one or several of the below options:
- 4:2:0 — good quality (most commonly used setting in online video)
- 4:4:4 — highest quality (no chroma subsampling)
- 4:2:2 — high quality (most commonly used in TV broadcasting)
- 4:1:1 — lower quality
Please note: Although it is part of the Chroma subsampling listing, the 4:4:4 setting does not actually imply any chroma subsampling and takes advantage of the full quality and resolution of both luminance and chrominance information.
