What is Bitrate?
The Bitrate is a measurement of the amount of data processed in a given unit of time. It is most often expressed in Bits per second — and its respective multiples (kB/s, MB/s, etc...).
In general, a higher bitrate will accommodate a higher quality file, however this will also result in a larger file, more processing time and a bigger bandwidth required to play back said file. Therefore the highest bit rate is not always preferable.
Bitrate settings in Advalidation
In Advalidation you can either:
- Specify total bitrate (video + audio + container + metadata)
- Specify video and audio bitrate separately
In both cases, the Minimum and Maximum fields work the same:
- Minimum — set the Minimum bitrate value of your choice in kbps — leave blank to indicate no Minimum threshold
- Maximum — set the Maximum bitrate value of your choice in kbps — leave blank to indicate no Maximum threshold (Unlimited)
Please note:
The Total Bitrate includes the video bitrate and the audio bitrate as well as the container and metadata bitrate which may result in a little overhead when compared to the video and audio bitrates only.
If a QA result seems off in regards to the Total Bitrate, we suggest you set individual values for video and audio instead.
Advalidation's recommendation
Enabling this setting ensures files match your requirements in regards to bitrate.
